Facts about Periodontitis treatment

What is Periodontitis?Inflammation and long-term tissue loss in the area of the periodontium (gum / bone loss; in the longterm tooth loss)
Symptoms and course:Initial stage: redness or swelling of the gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, formation of gum pockets
Advanced stage: receding gums, loss of bone substance, loosening of teeth
Anesthesia:Local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation on request
Duration of treatment:Depending on the severity
Costs:Depending on severity, scope and effort

Patients often underestimate the extent of untreated Periodontitis due to a lack of Oral hygiene. Genetic reasons can also play an important role. The consequences are receding Gums or even the loss of a Tooth. But how do you notice Periodontitis? If you suffer from bad breath, swelling or redness of the gums, bleeding gums or the formation of gum pockets, this may be an indication of Periodontitis in its early stages. If there is a reduction in bone substance, receding gums and loose gums, this may already be an advanced stage of Periodontitis. In both cases, you should see a dentist as soon as possible for an examination and advice. As a competent periodontist in Zurich, we are happy to be your point of contact.

Frequently asked questions about Periodontitis

How can Periodontitis be prevented?

Oral hygiene at home plays an important role in the prevention of Periodontitis. This should be done thoroughly twice a day in the morning and evening. Tooth should be brushed for three minutes with a toothbrush. The spaces between the teeth should then be cleaned with Dental floss or an Interdental brush. You should also have your teeth professionally cleaned at least 2x per year. This removes plaque and calculus that cannot be removed by simple daily Oral hygiene.

What are the symptoms of Periodontitis?

Patients with early-stage Periodontitis usually suffer from bleeding gums, swelling or redness of the gums, the formation of periodontal pockets and bad breath. If symptoms such as bone loss and receding gums occur, the patient is already in an advanced stage of Periodontitis. In both cases, see a dentist as soon as possible!

How painful is periodontitis treatment?

Generally our patients do not feel any pain during periodontitis treatments. However, if you suffer from dental anxiety, we are happy to offer you treatment under nitrous oxide sedation or general anesthesia at our dental practice in Zurich.

Does health insurance cover the costs of periodontitis treatment?

If you signed up for supplementary dental insurance, the costs of periodontitis treatment are usually covered. However, Swiss basic health insurance does not cover the costs.

Is Periodontitis contagious?

Yes, Periodontitis can be transmitted via kissing, for example, as this is an infectious disease caused by bacteria.

What medication should I take after periodontitis treatment?

Depending on the extent of the Periodontitis, we will prescribe medication. In the case of severe Periodontitis, it may be necessary to take antibiotics. The use of an antiseptic mouthwash and Interdental brushes prevents re-infection.

What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gums and in later stages the bone and tooth. It is caused by the bacterial flora in the plaque or in the gum pockets, which attack the gums and the tooth by leaking acid. Those affected initially suffer from bleeding gums, swelling or redness and bad breath. If Periodontitis is not treated, the gums recede, the bone substance is irreversibly degraded and the periodontium is at risk. Timely treatment of periodontitis by an experienced periodontist is therefore extremely important. To prevent Periodontitis, we advise you to have your teeth professionally cleaned every 6-12 months, as daily Oral hygiene is not enough to prevent Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is not only an inflammatory disease in the mouth but also interferes with your body in general. Periodontitis is also linked to other severe diseases such as cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's dementia or hormonal changes after the menopause.

Periodontitis treatment procedure

The treatment depends on the extent of Periodontitis. The periodontist first examines the status of your Tooth to assess whether the Periodontitis is still in the early stages or already at an advanced stage. We record the findings like type and depth of gum pockets of this examination digitally. With the help of digital 2D/3D X-rays, we can also identify whether there are deep gum pockets and degradation of the Jawbone. Your individual treatment is then planned and carried out precisely.

Basic treatment of Periodontitis

At our dental practice in Zurich, we first remove the bacteria, the source of Periodontitis, as part of the basic treatment by performing an oral and Teeth cleaning. We remove any harmful plaque and clean the tooth surfaces to rid the entire oral cavity of acid-secreting bacteria and protect it in the long term. Additional treatment elements can be Perio Chips applied in deep gum pockets to contribute to the healing process or Laser treatment.

Periodontal surgery treatment

If the Periodontitis is already at an advanced stage, the periodontist will perform periodontal surgery treatment. This involves applying curative biomaterials such as Emdogain and others that are necessary for the treatment of receding gums and inflammation of the tooth bed caused by bacteria in order to rebuild the tissue and bone.
