Tailored treatment concepts for optimal results

Healthy, straight teeth are an important feature of attractiveness for many people. However, misaligned teeth or jaws can be more than just an aesthetic problem. Depending on their extent, they can also have a negative impact on health. This makes it even more important to counteract significant misalignments at an early stage. Aligners offer a gentle and at the same time very effective option. After a careful examination, we will discuss which Aligners is right for you in a personal consultation. You are welcome to make an appointment at our dental practice in Zurich. We look forward to seeing you!

Frequently asked questions about braces

What types of braces are there?

A basic distinction can be made between fixed and removable ("loose") orthodontic techniques. With fixed braces, the individual elements of the braces ("brackets") are fixed to the teeth for the entire duration of the treatment. In contrast, you do not wear removable aligners permanently.

Who is suitable for braces?

Braces are suitable for children and adults with misaligned teeth or jaws. The prerequisite is that the patient's teeth are otherwise healthy. This means that there must be no caries or inflammation of the periodontium at the start of treatment.

How long does the treatment with braces take?

The duration of treatment with braces varies greatly from person to person. For children and adolescents it usually takes around 2 years, for adult patients it can be significantly shorter or longer. The duration of treatment depends primarily on the personal wishes for correction and the current state of the teeth.

Can I eat and drink normally with braces?

Loose braces are removed for eating, so you have no restrictions here. If you have fixed braces, you should avoid eating sticky foods such as gummy bears or chewing gum. This is because they could bend or even loosen parts of the braces. We also recommend cutting hard foods such as raw fruit (e.g. apples) or vegetables (e.g. carrots) into small pieces and chewing them with your side teeth instead of biting them off with your front teeth.

Will braces change my pronunciation?

Problems with pronunciation may occur in the first few days after inserting new braces. However, patients adapt fast and these phonetic problems are usually not permanent, but disappear by themselves after a short phase.

Are there any risks that can occur during braces treatment?

Like any medical procedure, orthodontic treatment can lead to complications. These tend to occur, if at all, with fixed braces and can manifest themselves in such things as

  • Tooth pain due to the moving forces
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Decalcification stains on the tooth
  • Gum inflammation, recession or growth
  • Shortening of the tooth roots (due to strong pressure)

It is also possible for the tooth to move back to its original position after treatment if retention phase is too short or retention splints or retainers are not worn.

When are braces needed?

Braces correct misaligned teeth and jaws. Medically necessary reasons for such a correction are, for example, if:

  • the chewing function is significantly impaired
  • results in speech or language problems
  • Causes problems with the Temporomandibular joint that result in further health impairments (e.g. headaches, tension or tinnitus)
  • Oral hygiene is so difficult that there is an increased susceptibility to caries or gingivitis
  • is such a major aesthetic problem for the person affected that it leads to behavioral changes and psychological complaints (such as social withdrawal)

How does the treatment with braces work?

Tooth and jaw examinations are carried out before each treatment, taking chewing function into account. If it turns out that orthodontic treatment is necessary, we create an individual treatment plan. This always begins with a detailed consultation at our practice on Löwenplatz in Zurich. We will explain the possibilities and opportunities of orthodontic treatment and present you with what we consider to be the best treatment method. Before starting a treatment with us, we will demonstrate future results to you digitally in a accurate simulation. Of course, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and find out about the next steps of treatment.

In most cases, further examinations are necessary for the fabrication of braces, during which digital impressions are taken of your jaw. The dental laboratory uses these to create a precise tooth model, which is then used as the basis for a customized plastic splint. Removable models can usually be fitted without any problems or pain.

The prefabricated fixed braces are only adapted to your individual dental situation when they are inserted. In the first step, we bond the retaining elements to the outside of the teeth. The actual aligners are then fixed onto them. After insertion, your dentist in Zurich will carry out regular checks and further treatment.

All orthodontic treatments, including splint therapy, are planned, supervised and monitored by our experienced orthodontics specialist, Dr. Eberbach.

What needs to be considered after inserting the braces?

Tooth sensitivity and slight pressure may occur in the first few days after inserting braces. This applies equally to removable and fixed braces.

Your active cooperation is essential for the success of any orthodontic treatment. In the case of removable braces, this means that you wear the braces consistently. Thorough oral hygiene is also - or especially - essential during treatment. This is because food debris can easily get stuck between the tooth surface and the plastic splint, which can then lead to plaque and cause Caries.
