Facts about amalgam removal

What is amalgam removal?Removal of old, harmful amalgam fillings, amalgam replacement with modern, tooth-colored filling materials such as ceramics or composites
Risks of amalgam fillings:Highly toxic mercury escapes from the amalgam filling through chewing or contact with acidic/hot food and penetrates the body

Recognizing and treating dental subjects which are related to the whole organism, is a top priority at our dental practice in Zurich. This treatment concept is called biological or holistic dentistry and gets to the bottom of interactions based on knowledge of physiology, chemistry, biochemistry and physics.

Amalgam removal is a core treatment of biological dentistry. As amalgam is an unprecious metal, it is a foreign inorganic material in the body. In addition, the metal contains harmful mercury, which is extremely toxic to the body. Mercury can dissolve from the filling after a certain period of time and eventually enter the body, representing a major health risk.

We therefore offer you safe and gentle amalgam removal at our dental practice in Zurich. We will be happy to inform you about the removal of amalgam fillings in a personal consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!

Frequently asked questions about amalgam removal

Why is amalgam removal useful?

Amalgam fillings contain harmful inorganic mercury. If this escapes from the filling, it is deposited in the patient's body and is a severe health risk to the person affected. Symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, liver and kidney dysfunction or cardiovascular problems can be the result and others.

What are the risks of amalgam removal?

In our dental practice in Zurich, we work under the highest safety precautions and use, among other things, the dental rubber dam, modern suctioning systems and special gentle technology for amalgam removal. Treatments during pregnancy are not recommended.

How is safe amalgam removal ensured?

During amalgam removal, we cool the treatment area with water and use a modern drill that generates hardly any heat. In this way, we ensure that harmful mercury vapours are minimized as far as possible. The dental rubber dam used during treatments, the special suctioning systems and modern gentle technology also ensure maximum protection for the patient.

Health risks of amalgam fillings

The consumption of acidic or hot foods, as well as the dental filling itself, allows the toxic mercury contained in the amalgam filling to enter the body and be deposited there. The consequences can range from headaches and tiredness to heart and circulatory problems. Patients with an amalgam filling are exposed to a high health risk and should have the metal removed by a specialist dentist.

Aesthetically amalgam fillings suffer from poor looks, especially if they are placed in the lower jaw or visible areas in your mouth. Amalgam fillings also discolor teeth and gums gray/blue.

Procedure for amalgam removal

In a consultation at our dental practice in Zurich, we will discuss the necessary steps for your amalgam removal with you personally and finally determine the replacement material for your new filling. We would like to point out that amalgam fillings cannot be removed during pregnancy. The risk of the unborn child being harmed by harmful amalgam particles escaping is too high.

During the entire treatment, however, we ensure gentle removal under the highest safety measures. To this end, we use special instruments such as the dental rubber dam, which separates the treatment area from the oral cavity and protects it from harmful particles. We also have a special suction device, the so-called clean-up suction device, at our dental practice in Zurich. This modern system sucks in the vapors of mercury and infectious tooth substance produced during treatment as well as the dust from amalgam, bacteria, water and air. With the help of a protective cap, the suction cup is placed directly on the tooth so that all harmful substances can be removed directly without coming into direct contact with the patient. However, in order to reduce mercury vapors as much as possible, we use a drill in our dental practice in Zurich that generates hardly any heat. We also cool the treatment area with water during amalgam removal. Once the amalgam filling has been removed, the tooth is restored with a new, high-quality white filling or onlay. At our dental practice in Zurich, we use the CEREC Primescan, an innovative dental scanner for the precise fabrication of dental restorations. With this technology (optical impression with CEREC camera), we guarantee extremely comfortable treatment because the gag reflex often experienced by patients in connection with the classic method of dental impressions is eliminated. Treatment with the CEREC Primescan also enables fast treatment in just one dental session.
